MINI history
The original British Mini
The original Mini was introduced in 1959 by the British Motor Corporation. Designed by Alec Issigonis, its transverse engine and front-wheel-drive layout became one of the most influential small-car designs of the 20th century.
MINI under BMW
BMW acquired the MINI name through its ownership of Rover Group and relaunched MINI as a modern marque in 2001. The new generation retained the original car’s compact character while expanding into new body styles.
